WHAT: New England Newspaper Association is the regional professional
organization for the newspapers in the six New England states: Connecticut,
Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont.
HISTORY: NENA was founded in 1981, the result of a merger between two
old-line associations, the New England Daily Newspaper Association and the
New England Newspapers Advertising Bureau.
MISSION: Its principal mission is to provide education and information to
the New England newspaper industry. This is done in several ways:
- By conducting educational workshops on virtually every newspaper subject
imaginable. Each year, there are 50 to 60 training programs on a wide
variety of topics that draw large attendances from the newspapers in the
region.
- By publishing a comprehensive newsletter - the NENA Bulletin - regarded
as a leader in its field for keeping newspaper personnel up-to-date with
developments in the industry in New England.
- By issuing several specialized monthly reports on advertising linage and
circulation trends, and conducting surveys on a variety of topical
newspaper subjects.
- By providing a central source for newspaper information about New England
- a one-step resource for everything there is to know about the regional
newspaper business.
CONVENTIONS: NENA holds two publishers' conventions a year, in March and
October, the regional industry's most important meetings where front office
management gathers to keep current with what is going on.
AD NETWORK: In addition, the association operates the NENA Ad Network, a
one-order, one-bill advertising placement service, which has provided a new
revenue stream for newspapers in the region.
