NENA'S fall publishers' conference, an important newspaper event in New England, will be held this year October 24-25-26 at the Marriott Hotel in Quincy, Mass., just off Interstate 95. NENA is meeting in partnership this fall with the New England Society of Newspaper Editors and the prestigious Yankee Quill Awards dinner.

This will be one of NENA's best conferences. There will be an extraordinary professional atmosphere with a lot of useful ideas and inspirations. The program will focus on editorial excellence and the challenges of providing it in the current environment within the newspaper industry. 9:15 a.m. Walter Anderson, Chairman & CEO, Parade Magazine...one of the country's most inspirational newspaper speakers. You will alternately laugh and cry. It will truly be a session not to miss!
10:30 Local, Local, Local: Is this the key to the future for information companies?
--The premise: To compete effectively in an internet age, information companies need not only compelling and important news, but exclusive news – news people need, and can't get anywhere but us.
--The program: What dailies can learn from weeklies about hyperlocal success. We need newspapers that are diversifying and starting new outlets, whether paper or web. We look at what has worked around the region and what hasn't.
--Participants include Tom Kearney, former editor of the Keene Sentinel and editor of the Stowe (VT) Reporter and Chazy Dowaliby, editor of the Quincy (MA) Patriot Ledger.
Noon Luncheon – NENA and NESNE awards presentation
1:30 p.m. Creating an atmosphere of excellence
--The premise: Exclusive, compelling stories, written well, will draw in consumers.
--The program: How can an information company create an atmosphere where people do their best work?
--Participants are this year's NENA and NESNE award winners and editors and publishers with a track record of journalistic excellence.

9:00 a.m. What are journalism schools teaching, and why?
--The questions: What do students want? What do employers want? What is the relationship between the curriculum and the job market? Where is the line between the classic values of journalism – intelligence, curiosity, reporting, writing – and the importance of technology to delivering information? What are the keys to getting a good job? What will be the keys in the future?
--Moderated by Brett Rhyne – Salem State journalism professor.
--Participants: Journalism professors from across New England.
10:30 David Shribman, VP/Executive Editor, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, a Pulitzer prize winning journalist, nationally syndicated columnist and regular panelist on the PBS show, "Washington Week In Review." A sought after speaker, his provocative presentation will be a standout.
The Social Side
There will be receptions both Wednesday and Thursday evenings in the hotel from 6:00 to 7:00. Chance to meet publishers, editors, other newspaper people, vendors, from all over the region.

Yankee Quill Awards
This is a prestigious dinner to honor this year's Yankee Quill Award winners. It will be held Thursday evening, the 25th, at the hotel. It is an optional event but we urge you to participate in this venerable event that has become legendary in the New England media community. It is always an enjoyable evening. This year's winners are:
Eileen McNamara, a Pulitzer winner while at The Boston Globe, now a journalism professor at Brandeis...Jim Taricani, an investigative reporter for WJAR-TV in Providence who was jailed for refusing to disclose a news source...Larry McDermott, publisher of The Republican in Springfield and president, Massachusetts Newspaper Publishers Association...Barbara Walsh, award- inning reporter at The Eagle-Tribune in Lawrence and the Portland Press Herald...Michael Donoghue, sportswriter at the Burlington Free Press and executive secretary of the Vermont Press Association. This is an optional event at $75 per person. There will be a checkoff on the registration form, also soon to be posted on the NENA website to indicate you want to go to Yankee Quill.
NESNE and NENA Awards
NESNE's coveted awards for reporter, editor and photographer and the Judy Brown Spirit of Journalism Award will come at the Thursday luncheon. So will NENA's Reader First Award and Distinguished Service Awards.
NENMA Program
The New England New Media Association (NENMA) will hold a seminar the day before, Wednesday, October 24, at the hotel. This is an option also, requiring a separate registration at $125. This program will have Steve Yelvington, prominent online personality, as keynote speaker and panel discussions on several online topics currently in the forefront.
